General Statement of Job 

The Head Coach is expected to serve as the public face of the program, creating and maintaining a positive public image while encouraging and training student-athletes to compete at the highest level possible. This position must also lead and maintain a positive program through on-field teaching techniques, scheduling, monitor academic progress, budget management, as well as promoting the sport throughout the District and local community.  This position shall have a strong working knowledge and understanding of all SCHSL rules and regulations regarding compliance issues. 


It is the responsibility of the Head Football Coach to coordinate and oversee the hiring process of any and all assistant coaches as well as assign individual roles and duties based on their background knowledge and abilities. Will ensure that all assistant coaches work to ensure that players fully understand the fundamentals of the game; teaching safe and effective techniques surrounding the game of football.The coach must develop and maintain a competitive schedule that will allow the team to prepare and compete successfully in the conference, as well as, in post-season play. Requires significant influence and communication with Athletic Director and Principal. Problems faced are frequently complex and multidimensional, requiring broad-based consideration of variables that impact multiple areas of the organization.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • It is the responsibility of the Head Football Coach to coordinate and oversee the hiring process of any and all assistant coaches as well as assign individual roles and duties based on their background knowledge and abilities. 
  • Will ensure that all assistant coaches work to ensure that players fully understand the fundamentals of the game; teaching safe and effective techniques surrounding the game of football.  
  • The duty of the Head Football Coach is to ensure that all assistant coaches assigned to the coaching staff are fully cleared through the District Office and Athletic Director with all documents and certifications successfully completed prior to being allowed access to any and all athletic facilities. 
  • Will also scout other teams and watch film to prepare plays and game plans.  
  • They will work hard and plan accordingly to make all game-day and game-time decisions. 
  • Holds organizational meetings for team prospects and encourages potential athletes to participate in the sport.  
  • The Head Football Coach and Athletic Director will work hand in hand to  coordinate practice times,  transportation and game schedule. They will also work together for any budgetary needs the football program may need for upcoming seasons. 
  • The Head Football Coach will meet with players and their families when eligibility is in jeopardy of becoming ineligible for play. 
  • The Head Football coach is responsible for completing routine grade checks to ensure the academic eligibility of all players. 
  • Assesses and formally document player’s skills and assigns team positions during tryout periods. 
  • Develops a regular practice schedule and organizes practice time to provide both individual and team development. 
  • Coaches and instructs players, individually or in groups regarding the rules, regulations, equipment and techniques of the sport. 
  • Observes players, during games and practice to determine the needs for individual or team improvement. 
  • Determines game strategy based on the team’s capabilities. 
  • Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior and provides proper supervision of athletes at all times. 
  • Monitors the academic performance of team members to ensure that eligibility requirements are met; and encourages student athletes to maintain a high academic standard. 
  • Follows established procedures in the event of an athlete’s injury. 
  • Follows state, regional, and district regulations governing the athletic program. 
  • Acts as a team representative and promotes the sport by communicating with the news media, booster clubs, service clubs and other organizations. 
  • Follows established procedures for the proper care, maintenance, and requisitioning of equipment, supplies and uniforms. 
  • Works with the athletic director to develop a policy for awards and submits a list of award winners at the end of the season. 
  • Participates in special activities to include parent’s night, banquets, award nights, and pep assemblies, 
  • Maintains eligibility forms, emergency data cards, insurance records, equipment inventory, and other related records. 
  • Models non discriminatory practices in all activities. 
  • Monitor athlete eligibility and physical expiration dates through PLANETHS 
  • Provide all necessary paperwork for each match or game day contest. 
  • Rides or Drives district provided transportation to and from events. 
  • Stays and monitors student-athletes until all team members have been picked up from campus. Appoints assistant coach to fill in if need be. 
  • Work with other members of school staff to plan and put in place instructional goals and objectives to ensure the overall educational development of student-athletes.
  • Assist the Athletic Director with scheduling scrimmages, jamborees, and non-region contests.
  •  Instruct and advise students on NCAA regulations with regard to academic requirements for scholarships and recruiting practices.
  • Maintains, files, and copies all pertinent SCHSL materials, eligibility forms, transfer forms, and grade reports, and ensures that the SCHSL and archdiocese guidelines are followed.
  • Encourage sportsmanlike conduct in all phases of athletic participation at all times.
  • Establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, principals, teachers, Athletic Director and Superintendent.
  • Oversee the process of cleaning, repairing, and storing all campus athletic equipment including the weight room.
  • The Principal may assign other duties and accountabilities limited to those consistent with the applicable job function and pay grade.
  • Football Locker Room Maintenance and Supervision.

Other Duties:

  • Attends staff development meetings, clinics and other professional activities to improve coaching performance. 
  • Performs any other related duties as assigned by the Principal & Athletic Director or other appropriate administrator. 

Training And Education 

High school coaches are required to have a valid South Carolina teaching certificate, at least a bachelor’s degree in a field such as physical education, health, kinesiology or another closely related discipline.  All applicants must have a current resume and must fully complete the F1S application. Some coaches choose to earn a master’s degree in education to increase their earning potential and qualify for administrative positions. High school coaches are required to receive certification in first aid and CPR. While most schools do not require a coaching certification, many coaches seek out additional certifications in sports such as volleyball, basketball and softball.

Minimum Qualification Special Knowledge/Skills and/or Abilities

A minimum of three years of experience as a head football coach, preferred, or five years as an assistant coach at the high school or college level. Must possess effective coaching techniques and skills. Must possess a thorough knowledge of the SCHSL rules, regulations, and strategies of the sport. Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the school guidance department, administrators, parents, and students.
